the man calls
he curses
his wife
hard
the child hears
he knows
but does not want to
he turns away
pretends to be playing
till he believes that he’s playing
the man calls
he nears
his child
gentle
the child hears
he knows
but does not want to
he turns towards him
pretends that the man is only a father
till he believes that that is true
the child
approaches
his father
till he sees mother
and again retreats in their midst
he knows
but does not want to
he turns away
pretends to be playing
till he believes that he’s playing
he nears
his child
gentle
he knows
but does not want to
he turns towards him
pretends that the man is only a father
till he believes that that is true
approaches
his father
and again retreats in their midst
This one grabbed me hard! It’s beautiful but also cruel; it’s very strong. You describe so well the feelings of this child torn apart by the parents and stuck in the middle of the conflict between them. His/her reactions to the violence, trying not to hear, not to see, pretending it doesn’t exist. You’ve found a great picture as well! It’s threatening, mirrors well the suffocating feeling of the poem! Great job!
